So there were many, many great things about this weekend's con and I'll get to them later. But the bad stuff gets its own post.
The Thistle Hotel were just amazingly bad and I'm honestly not happy about having to go back there in 6 weeks for the Alias con.
So, starting at the beginning:
First, there was Barbara on reception. Now, Barbara was a tad stressed out, possibly because there were a large amount of people to check in and she didn't quite have the skills to handle it.
Despite our two reference numbers she was adamant that there was only one room booked under
helsinkibaby's name. When we, amazingly calmly, asked her to look again her response was "There's no need to freak out, I'm doing the best I can!" if we hadn't been quite so shocked we probably would have asked for the manager.
Anyway, she checked again and, funnily enough, found we had a second room booked. Amazing.
Second, the hotel's restaurant. On the first night they offered to split our bill so that I could pay cash and Bronagh and Joanne could put it on the room. The key word there is offered.
So when the bill arrived and it hadn't been split we asked for it to be and the waiter actually threw a strop. It was unbelievable.
The second night, there was four of us and we ordered steak. I have mine medium-rare while the others have theirs medium-well done. We all ordered separately and he wrote everything down. So when our dinners arrived and mine was medium-well done and Jeanine, Bronagh and Joanne had medium-rare, it was a bit of a surprise.
Thirdly, there was the shower in mine and Jeanine's room. We had no hot water. None. At all. We complained five times and were assured each time that it would be sorted out. Was it? Of course not! Of course, it was then strangly satisfying when Barbara checked us out and had to apologize profusely to us, it was a start!
The fourth thing. Air conditioning seemed to be a foreign concept at that hotel. I kept falling asleep during Summer & Mark's talk on the Sunday just because it was that hot. And queuing for the autograph's on the Saturday was awful.
Lastly, all the staff seemed to be under the impression that because we were there for the con, our money wasn't worth as much as the other guests. Every member of staff I spoke to at that hotel (except the barman) was incredibly rude and I'm just amazed that that's how they treat paying guests.
So yes, that was the hotel. AND I HATE THEM!!!!!!!!
Good stuff coming after I've done some work.
